Most home centers like Home Depot and Lowe’s sell 2 cu. ft. bags by default.

The sweet spot for landscape garden beds is 2 to 3 inches deep.

If mulch is shallower than 2 inches, weed seeds easily penetrate sunlight and germinate, while the soil loses moisture to evaporation. If mulch is thicker than 4 inches, it can suffocate shallow plant roots and cause water to run off the surface. For established beds with existing mulch, an annual top-up of only 1 to 2 inches is recommended.

Bulk mulch is significantly cheaper per unit: $30 to $50 per cubic yard compared to $60 to $85 per yard when buying individual retail bags.

However, bulk suppliers charge a flat delivery fee ($40 to $100). The mathematical tipping point is typically around 2.5 to 3 cubic yards. If your job requires 3 yards or more (over 40 bags), bulk delivery is cheaper and saves you exhausting trips hauling hundreds of pounds in your personal vehicle.

One cubic yard of dry hardwood or pine bark mulch weighs approximately 400 to 600 pounds. If the mulch is wet, freshly processed, or artificially dyed and sitting in bulk bins during rain, the weight can jump to 800 to 1,000+ pounds per cubic yard.

A standard 1/2 ton pickup truck can safely haul 1.5 to 2 yards of dry mulch, or 1 to 1.5 yards of wet mulch.

You should refresh organic wood mulch once per year, preferably in late spring after the soil warms up.

There is usually no need to scrape off and discard old mulch; it naturally decomposes into rich organic matter that feeds your soil. Simply fluff up the compacted layer with a garden cultivator and add a fresh 1-inch top-coat to restore curb appeal and color.
